February is American Heart Month. Many people celebrate the month through various health conscious activities. Some quit smoking for a day, which can lead to a decision to quit for good. Others give heart-related gifts to spread the word. Some people work out together during the month. And, some bring awareness by observing National Wear Red Day which is the first Friday of every February.

Heart health facts:

  • Someone will have a heart attack every 40 seconds
  • Of people who suffer heart attacks, 1 out of every 5 goes unknown
  • Excessive alcohol, diabetes, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet can lead to a greater risk of heart disease

What you can do to improve heart health:

  • Stop smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Improve nutritional habits
  • Get regular check-ups from your doctor
  • Learn to manage your stress
